The Central Learning Partnership Trust — Sensory Activity Trails at Westcroft & Broadmeadow Special Schools, Wolverhampton

The Brief

We were commissioned by The Central Learning Partnership Trust to design and install bespoke Sensory Activity Trails across two of their special schools in Wolverhampton — Broadmeadow Special School (ages 3–11) and Westcroft School (ages 11–19).

The Trust wanted to create interactive and inclusive spaces to support pupils’ wellbeing and emotional regulation, offering safe, engaging areas where they could take time out, reset and re-focus.

Our challenge was to develop a cohesive design approach that could be tailored to the unique needs of two very different school environments — while ensuring the finished installations were durable, tactile and accessible for all learners.

The Process

Working in close collaboration with staff from both schools, we explored how sensory design could promote movement, mindfulness and self-regulation in everyday settings.

From initial concepts through to production and installation, our goal was to transform underused corridors and shared spaces into purposeful environments full of colour, interaction and joy.

The final sensory trails included:
Sensory Wall Activities – playful prompts such as find a colour, hit a splat, reach down low and up high, star jumps and spins encourage active movement and engagement.
The Feelings Rainbow Interactive Display – helping pupils identify and express emotions, complete with guided box breathing exercises to encourage calm and focus.
Main Hall Hopscotch Trail – a bright, durable floor graphic encouraging physical activity and coordination while adding a playful energy to shared spaces.
‘18 Before You’re 18!’ Wall Vinyl Display – celebrating personal milestones and inspiring pupils to complete 18 memorable experiences before leaving school — from visiting the seaside to riding public transport.

Each element was carefully designed and produced using high-quality, hard-wearing materials, ensuring vibrancy, tactility and longevity in busy school environments.

The End Result

The sensory trails have quickly become wellbeing hubs across both Broadmeadow and Westcroft Schools. Pupils now have welcoming, interactive spaces that help them regulate their emotions, build confidence and re-engage with learning.

Staff have already observed a positive impact on students’ mood, focus and readiness for the classroom — proving that thoughtful design can truly enhance wellbeing and inclusion.

We’re incredibly proud to have partnered with The Central Learning Partnership Trust, Westcroft School and Broadmeadow Special School to deliver this meaningful project — creating lasting, practical and joyful spaces for pupils aged 3 to 19.
